Famous Child Film and TV Stars

The film industry has always had many child actors who have become very successful. While many of these young stars have careers that span only a few years, there are others who continue to be fan favourites even after they become adults.

Shirley Temple is one of the most famous of all child stars and even today, no one has had the same powerful impact that she had as a performer. Today Shirley Temple dolls, books and autographs are still highly prized by fans and collectors. When America had their Great Depression President Roosevelt is reported to have proclaimed that "as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right”

Judy Garland (above) was another star who entertained audiences as a young teen, and she thrilled movie viewers with her famous portrayal of Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz”.

Mickey Rooney (above) was a small young boy with huge talent and a gift for comedy. He often was seen in many movies that featured Judy Garland and was one of the biggest box office draws for Hollywood during the 40s and 50s.

In the early 60s, the television show, “Andy Griffith”, was very popular and the little red haired boy who played his son contributed to that success. The boy was Ron Howard who later found success with the series, “Happy Days”. Today he is an award winning producer and director of some blockbuster Hollywood movies.

Drew Barrymore was the youngest member of the Barrymore family to enter the film world and as a very young, pigtailed girl; she co-starred in Steven Spielberg’s smash hit, “ET”.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are the twin sisters who shared the role of baby, Michelle, on the television show, “Full House”. They were born in 1986 and were seen on TV from 1987-1995. When the show finally ended these twins continued to star in television specials and movies, but they also made millions with their own lines of clothing and other ‘tween-age’ products.

Melissa Gilbert became known to millions when she was chosen by Michael Landon to portray the character of Laura Ingalls in the “Little House on the Prairie” television series. She starred in the role of ‘Half Pint’ for many years and made a successful transition to Hollywood actress as an adult.

Britney Spears was seen on Star Search in 1992 but failed to win over the voters and judges. She returned to television as one of Disney’s Mouseketeers on the updated New Mickey Mouse Club. Today she has gone from child actor and singer to fame as one of Pop music’s glamorous princesses.

Another singing and acting star that works for Disney is Miley Cyrus who plays the popular character, Hannah Montana. The star has recently celebrated her 16th birthday and is one of the most popular teen-age stars today.
