Superman, from comic book hero to TV and movie star!

Look up in the air and tell me what you see in the skies... is it a bird or a plane perhaps? No, of course not, well this means that it must be Superman. The television show that had live actors began with people asking this question.

This famous super hero is a favourite of both children and adults, and has been for generations. Superman was the first super hero and was a smashing success when introduced in a comic book almost 70 years ago.

This ‘man of steel’ was given some great abilities including flight, super strength, X-ray vision and the ability to travel through time. His red and blue suit, red cape and red and yellow insignia soon became recognizable to millions throughout the country who could barely stand the wait until they could read the next adventures.

This superhero has also had his own action packed television series featuring live actors during the 50s. In the late 70s and early 80s, Christopher Reeve stepped into the title role for the Superman big screen films, and for many people he was the one actor who personified this action hero.

During the 90s, there was another Superman television show that starred Dean Cain and Terry Hatcher. There are also many animated cartoons, and DVDs that feature the adventures of this highflying hero. Today children are enjoying watching the adventures of this super hero just as much as their grandparents and great grandparents did.

Superman was born in another galaxy on the planet Krypton and his real name was Kal-el. His planet, Krypton, was doomed to destruction and his parents built a rocket to send him to Earth where he would be safe. He was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Kent and raised as Clark Kent, a mild mannered boy who wore glasses and was not good at sports. Throughout his life, though, he would secretly change identities and use his super powers to battle evil villains and foil criminals.

The town of Smallville was where Superboy grew up until he moved to Metropolis to work as a reporter at the Daily Planet newspaper. There were always people who tried to discover his secret identity, and for years, no one was able to prove that Clark Kent was really Superman in disguise. Many of the best adventures were comic book stories that focused on Superman outwitting the people that tried to find out this secret.

The Superman character was actually a creation of two friends who met in high school in Ohio many years ago. While they did not like sports, these two teenagers had huge imaginations and enjoyed fantasies and adventure stories. When Superman was introduced in comic books during the 1930s, his adventures captivated an entire nation and they still do today.
