Batman for Kids

Batman Comic

A very early Batman comic

Batman is a good hero who can conquer the evil villains and criminals by using his special weapons, strength, athletic ability, and intelligence. He is not a super hero and has no magic powers, and this is why the character of Batman is so appealing to kids and adults in many countries today.

Comic books introduced Batman to the world as long ago as 1939 (that's about when when the Second World War started), and he was an instant hit, although not quite as well loved as Superman. The grey and black costume with the black bat hood, cape, gloves, and boots were trademarks for the character. Children would read the books to discover what new tricks Batman would use to save Gotham City from attacks by villains and criminals.

These are the original words that your parents or grandparents may have read many years ago in the first Batman adventures:

"Criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot.
So my disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts
I must be a creature of the night
Black Terrible
I shall become A BAT!"--

This was the original statement made by the alter ego of Batman, Bruce Wayne; and it first appeared in the book, "DETECTIVE COMICS" #33 in November 1939.

Batman was joined a bit later by the character of Robin in his adventures, and generations of kids were thrilled by their wonderful adventures and daring escapes from the clutches of evildoers. Gotham City was the imaginary setting for these exploits, and millions of children created their own imaginary adventures in which they became Batman.

During the 1960s, there was a tongue in cheek adventure series about Batman and Robin that appeared on television from 1966-68. This was a half hour spoof of the comic book and did not please many who were true Batman fans, but the show was very popular when it first began. There were always goofy battles, with giant words flashed on the screen like "Wham", "Kapow" and "Smash". Robin would say things like "Holy Torpedo, Batman, what do we do now?” When this show ended it wouldn’t be the last time the caped crusader would be on our TV screens. There have also been animated Batman series produced during the 1990s and in 2004.

With the first theatre/cinema release of the Batman movie, the character was taken back to his mysterious beginnings. People were reminded that he had been an orphan who lost his parents because of criminals and had decided to devote his life to fighting crime. Now there are 5 sequels to the original Batman movie, and audiences are used to seeing new actors in the title role. The original Batman was Michael Keaton, but Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale have all portrayed this dark and mysterious character.

The first Batman movie was released in 1989 and starred Michael Keaton as the Batman and Jack Nicholson as the evil Joker. The other Batman movies have been Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

The Batman cast includes Alfred the loyal butler, the Joker, the Riddler, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, the Bat-Mobile, and the Penguin. There are many other characters that have been introduced in the Batman comic books that you will enjoy discovering.
