A Brief History of some of the Best Antique Dolls from EuropeFor as long as there have been little girls, there have been dolls. Of course, there was a time when a girl’s doll was made up of sticks, leaves and other plant life but over the years, dolls evolved along with human invention and took on a more lifelike appearance. Dolls are are one of a child's most treasured and beloved possessions. Many grown women and men are interested in them for reasons other than play. In the early 18th century, dolls became collectible items and today there are thousands of people that collect and display them. The appearance of the porcelain dolls of today goes back centuries to Europe’s Germany and France. Though modern dolls are collectible, the vintage and antique dolls are most desired. By today’s standards, antique dolls are those made over 75 years ago and those made after are considered vintage or modern. The House of Bru French doll makers such as the House of Bru, began production in the 19th century. The House of Bru had its beginnings in the home of Leon Casmir Bru and his wife, Appolyne. He had worked as a doll assembler for a brief period before deciding to design and create his own. He began creating his own unique dolls with bodies made of leather and heads made from a few different molds with small changes made to the molds to produce various expressions. His wife’s talents as a seamstress went into creating costumes for the dolls. Beautiful artistry and a demand created by children and collectors alike took the business upward very quickly. They sold the business in 1883 and it passed through two more owners before shutting down production. From the Brus and respective owners sprang several lines of “fashion”, “lady”, and “child” dolls with the most famous lines being the Nursing Bru, the Brevete and the Bebe Bru Jne. Bru dolls are known for their beauty and timeless innocence. The Jumeau Company The Jumeau Company began producing dolls decades before The House of Bru. The first fashion dolls were actually brought into production around 1841. Until 1855, Pierre Francois Jumeau made doll heads from paper mache and then he began using porcelain heads produced by sculptors and designers. His wife, Ernestine made the dolls’ beautiful dresses. Some Notable Antique Dolls from the Jumeau Company Bebe Incassble, and “E.J.” - the most recognized face (1876 - 1883) Bebe Jumeau, also “Jumeau Triste” (1878-1880) Bebe Depose Tete (1886 - 1889) Paris Bebe (1892 - 1899) The Jumeau Triste has the distinction of having been modeled by a famous sculptor with King Henry of Navaara as his model. It is the most widely admired doll from the Jumeau Company. That is not the only connection Jumeau had with royalty. The Paris Bebe was modeled after the Duke of Bordeaux. We haven’t really begun to discuss all the lines of dolls from these two top doll makers and these companies are not the only European doll makers to produce charming, collectible dolls. Be sure to look into more French doll makers and do not neglect Germany if you are considering collecting antique European dolls.
