Baby Sun Protection Tips and Advice

Sun protection advice for babies

If you are a parent to a new baby, this summer you will no doubt be thinking of some fun outdoor activities you can have with your young child. As with any concerned parent, you also will be conscious of the need to protect your baby's delicate new skin from the dangers of over exposure to the sun. The skin of a baby is far more sensitive to the sun's rays that you may think, and it's vital to take the necessary steps to ensure your baby does not suffer any potentially harmful burning. There are many baby sun protection clothes and products available on speciality web sites and high street retailers, some of which you would want to consider to be essential.

A baby sunsuit or two piece bottoms and tops set is certainly something you'll need when on a beach holiday or by the pool, whether in the UK or overseas.  Check that the label indicated the material is equivilent to at least a factor 50 sunblock and is approved as a sun protective swimwear garment.

A sun hat is also a common sun protective line, and is certainly important when out and about in regular baby clothing but in itself would not be anything approaching adequate as sole sun protection when out playing in the open sky for long periods. Sun hats can be the wide brim design but a legionnaire's style hat is usually preferable as it offers valuable protection to the back of the head and neck in addition to the peak cap at the front. Again, sun hats can carry approval marks which indicate the material itself is sufficiently UV proof.

Shop around and you might find complete sunproof sets for babies comprising a UV sunsuit or two piece set with matching hat. Combine that with a good sun protection cream and your infant is well on the way to being able to enjoy a fun day out safely and in comfort.

Don't forget their eyes either. A baby's eyes are even more sensitive to the sun than our own, so you can only imagine the discomfort that they may experience when travelling face up in a pram, pushchair or car seat. Specially designed sunglasses for babies are now readily available and should also be considered. Studies have shown that the earlier children wear sunglasses the better for long term eye protection.  As with regular sunglasses, standards existing to indicate the level of protection they offer. Look for UV400 rated model and compliance to AS 1067-1990 and other standards.

Browse the internet for other sun protection advice for children and enjoy the summer!
