Natures Way of Protecting The Body

Did you know that you have body armour?
You do… and some of your personal armour might surprise you.  Here is a list of some of our protective body parts and how they work.

Skin
Your skin might not feel much like the outside of an armoured tank but it really gives you a lot of protection. You might even say it is our outer armour. Our skin is the biggest organ in our entire body and it helps to keep us safe. Skin also protects our bones, muscles, and insides by covering them up. Our skin may not be that tough when we touch it but it can be very tough when it counts. Think about what happens when we fall, the skin may scrape and bruise, but it helps keep our bones cushioned so they do not break easily.

Spine
Your spine, or backbone, helps protect the many nerves that connect to your brain.

Eyelashes and Eyelids
These little soft eyelashes attached to our eyelids are constantly working to blink away dust and debris that would hurt our eyes.  Our lashes and eyelids use reflex actions to close when danger is near, and we do not have to give them instructions. Actually if we had to tell our eyelids to close, we could not do it fast enough to offer any real protection for our eyes. When our eyes and brain detect something that might be dangerous, they use lightning fast reflexes to close. This protection keeps our eyes safe and sound.

Toenails and Fingernails
At last, we can see how some really tough body armour works. We can feel the toughness of our nails and it is easy to see how handy these are. Our nails protect the sensitive nail beds on our fingers and toes.

Hair
The hair on our heads protects our tender scalps. This is a kind of body armour that is very useful since the sun shines down on our heads all during the day. Without this covering of hair it would be easy for us to get sunburn on top of our heads and boy, would that hurt! We lose about 50 individual hairs from our scalp every day…thank goodness most of us have lots of new ones that are replacing them.

Nose Hair
Now, now….don’t laugh…the hair in our noses really is quite helpful. These tiny hairs help filter out dirt particles that we would breathe into our lungs. This body protection makes sure that the air we inhale is cleaned before we use it. Without these nose hairs we would be coughing a lot more and have many more illnesses.

Rib cages
Yep…this is bony body armour that gives our heart and lungs a great deal of protection. Without our ribs, we would have no defence to protect our lungs, heart, and liver from outside bumps and bruises. Any hard hit in our chest would be very damaging to our insides.

Skulls
Our hardest and most well designed body armour is our skull.  Human skulls are very hard and strong. This is the body armour that protects our brain and it is well prepared to handle a few bumps and bruises along the way. We fall, tumble, and knock our heads on many things like car doors, trees, swings and other objects. Luckily, our tough skulls are able to stand up to this type of treatment without letting our brain get injured.
