Hey Kids - Brush up on Tooth Care

So many of us take our teeth for granted and sometimes we think that not brushing our teeth before bed cannot possibly be that important. Or can it?
Having healthy teeth and gums are very important to all of us. We use our teeth to bite, tear, and chew the good foods that we want to eat. If we are not brushing our teeth, one day we may try to chomp a bite of apple and oops…..there goes a tooth!
Our teeth don’t know that sweets are not good for them, they are very obedient and simply do what we tell them to do as long as we take care of them.
Teeth help us speak so that others can understand what we are saying. Without these pearly white wonders, most of the letters of the alphabet will begin to sound alike when we talk.
Some of you may remember the way it sounds when your front baby teeth were missing. Even family members like to playfully tease those who are waiting for their adult teeth to appear.
Remember that song,” All I Want for Christmas Is My 2 Front Teeth”? Everyone goes through moments like that when they are 6 or 7 years old.
Shiny, clean, healthy teeth and gums help keep your body and heart in top condition too. Hmmmmmm, have I mentioned that brushing your teeth also helps your breath to smell good. If you don’t want friends running away or backing up when you speak then brushing your teeth 3 times a day is a “Must Do”.
Perhaps some of you might think bad breath would be a good defence against enemies, but let’s banish that thought from your mind, it doesn’t work. Losing your teeth and having bad breath is not worth keeping enemies at a distance.
Now let’s look at a timeline of what happens if we don’t brush our teeth properly:
Our teeth get yellowed and fuzzy looking because of old food particles that stick to them, some people even get green colouring at the base of their gums…..Gross!!
Our pink gums get sore and pale
Our breath becomes foul and smelly, people can smell your breath from several feet away….Honest.
Bacteria can attack our teeth and create holes called cavities; the bacteria can even travel to our hearts and make us ill.
Toothaches occur and these are really painful because the nerves of the poor teeth are hurting. One cavity in a tooth can cause your entire mouth to ache.
The dentist may try to repair the tooth with a filling or by doing a root canal. A root canal means that most of the tooth left is now artificial.
If your tooth, or teeth, cannot be fixed, the dentist will have to pull it and we only get one set of permanent teeth to work with.
To keep your own pearly white teeth in the peak of condition you should always:
- Eat healthy foods
- Avoid sugary foods, especially sticky ones like caramels and fudge
- Eat fruit
- Drink milk or water instead of fizzy sodas
- Brush your teeth at least 3 times a day (and floss at night too!).
- Use mouth rinses that will remove plaque
- Visit the dentist twice at least once a year for a check-up and a professional cleaning.
Now look in the mirror, smile a really big ear to ear grin, and remember that these teeth have to last for the rest of your life….and that’s a really long time…
