Some Classic Books for Children

Some of the best moments in a day are when you watch your child read or you choose an entertaining story to share with them at bedtime. Parents often wonder just what authors and titles might be right for their children. There are many classic children’s books that you can select that will charm and delight children, no matter their age. While some of the books have been recently written, others have stood the test of time over many years. All of these books have one thing in common and that is their immense popularity with young readers throughout the world.
1. The Tales of Peter Rabbit- by Beatrix Potter is a perennial favourite for young readers. This book is a delightful account of the adventures of the mischievous little rabbit who loved to run and explore the beautiful and delicious, garden. Other stories by this author include The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher and The Tale of the Pie and the Patty Pan.
2. Grimm’s Fairy Tales- (by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm) this book of enchanting fairy stories includes childhood favourites like “Tom Thumb”, “Cinderella”, and “Sleeping Beauty”.
3. Just So Stories- by Rudyard Kipling is a collection of amazing and whimsical tales that children never grow tired of hearing. “The Crab that Played with the Sea” and “How the Leopard Got its Spots” are two favourite selections.
4. James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Charlie and the Glass Elevator -are only a few books by the beloved author, Roald Dahl. These stories combine humour and adventure that make them appealing to both children and adults.
5. Harry Potter- by JK Rowling is a classic although it is a very recent book. The Harry Potter series has become an international best seller and many children became devoted readers because of these stories.
6. Anne of Green Gables-by Lucy Maud Montgomery was published in 1908 and the adventures of the courageous Anne have inspired girls for generations.
7. Blue Fairy Book- by Andrew Lang is a collection of magical stories that are over 100 years old, but they still capture the imagination of children of all ages.
8. Fairy Tales- by Hans Christian Andersen was first published over 150 years ago, and these tales continue to enchant and delight parents and children. While your child may be able to read these wonderful stories alone they will be thrilled to listen as you recite the fairyland adventures to them. With this classic book, both you and your children can discover the charm of tales like “The Little Mermaid”, “Thumbelina”, and “The Red Shoes”.
9. Peter Pan- by JM Barrie is a famous and treasured book as well as a movie, and children never tire of hearing the story of the boy who did not want to grow up. The adventures of Peter and the Lost Boys continue to fascinate both boys and girls who love to act out many of the scenes in the book.
10. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland- this book by Lewis Carroll continues to be a favourite classic and the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat are only a few of the many popular characters found within these pages.
