New Disney Princess Tiana

Princess Tiana, the new Disney Princess from "The Frog Prince"

When you think of a fairy tale princess, you probably imagine a beautiful girl who is kind and thoughtful, and very brave. Well, this is certainly what the Disney studios were thinking about when they decided to create their very own Disney Princesses. The Disney characters with true "princess" qualities were then honoured with this royal title.

All Disney Princesses Must Have:

Beauty
Kindness
Courage
Ability to Communicate With Animals
A Good Voice for Singing
A Handsome Prince as her One True Love

The 3 earliest Disney Princesses were Snow White, Cinderella and the lovely Aurora who is more widely known as Sleeping Beauty.

The beautiful princess, Snow White, is a fairytale character, but she also became the star of Walt Disney’s first feature animation film. She was the daughter of a king and she had a jealous and wicked stepmother. This wicked queen tried to have the princess killed. The frightened princess was left in the forest and was befriended by the 7 Dwarfs who let her stay with them. The stepmother finds Snow White and feeds her a bite of a poisoned apple, but instead of dying the beautiful princess sleeps until she is found by a handsome prince who wakes her with a kiss.

The story of Cinderella is another fairy tale that was made into a wonderful movie by Walt Disney. In this story, Cinderella is given a coach, a beautiful gown, and glass slippers by her fairy godmother so she can go to the ball. Cinderella meets her handsome prince at the ball but she must leave before Midnight or her clothing will change back to rags and her coach will become a pumpkin. In her desperate rush to get home, one glass slipper is left behind. The prince finds his princess by trying the delicate slipper on the foot of every young woman in the kingdom until he finds that it fits the lovely Cinderella.

The Princess Aurora and her entire family had an enchanted spell that made them all sleep for many years as time stood still. One day a handsome prince arrived at the castle, fell in love with the Sleeping Beauty, and kissed her. The kiss of her true love woke the princess and everyone in the castle and they all lived happily ever after.

Other new additions to the royal line are from more modern films. Today, the names of Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, and Pocahontas have earned their places of honor on the list of Walt Disney Princesses.

Ariel was the beautiful and confident daughter of King Triton, and a royal princess by birth. She was also a brave, courageous girl who would get into trouble due to her very curious nature.

Belle is the heroine of the story Beauty and the Beast, and this character is stubborn, impetuous and dreams of adventures every day.  Belle learns some valuable lessons about herself and she falls in love with the kindhearted Beast and discovers that he is really a prince.

Jasmine is the lovely Middle Eastern Princess who is the romantic and independent minded daughter of a Sultan. As she nears her 16th birthday she is supposed to choose a husband, but she wants to marry someone she falls in love with and decides to run away. At the marketplace, she meets Aladdin who is a clever thief with a heart of gold, and discovers that he is her one true love.

Mulan is the Chinese heroine with the soul and spirit of a fighter. She is very independent, outspoken, and intelligent and decides to runs away, join the army, and fight for her country. Many of today’s girls identified with the strong will of this Disney Princess.

Pocahontas is the Native American daughter of a chief who has a deep love of nature and an adventurous and fun loving personality. She teaches others to see the beauty in everything around them.

In 2009, there is a new princess whose name and face will grace this famous list. Princess Tiana is due to be introduced in the movie, “The Frog Princess” and she will add even more diversity to this list by being the first African-American Disney Princess.
