Do You Know the Effects of Prolonged Sun Exposure?![]() Bronze, tanned bodies are on display during the summer season and many people bask for hours under the sizzling rays of the sun. Thanks to the tanning salons there is a way for sun worshippers to achieve a perfect shade of brown any time of the year with or without being out of doors. To a number of people summertime means a quest for the darkest, most decadent tan possible. But just what cost is involved when you expose your skin to the sun for hours at a time. Do you know that there are many more dangers from sun exposure than just a mild case of sunburn? Facial wrinkles; leathery skin; fine lines around the eyes; vision problems; skin rashes, and melanomas can all result from over exposure to the sun’s UV rays. These are problems that affect your appearance, but they can also negatively affect your health. If you are not taking precautions to protect your skin, hair and eyes it will be only a matter of time before you are going to pay the price. Both adults and kids are at risk and sunscreen products should be used before going outside. Doctors today are cautioning parents about the importance of beginning proper skin safety routines with even the smallest children. The problem with getting the public to take sun safety seriously is largely related to the fact that some of the biggest threats can not be seen immediately. Skin damage is cumulative and the results may not be apparent until years later. Many melanoma cases seen in adults can be traced back to too much time in the sun as a child or teenager. Everyone has either experienced the effects of a painful sunburn, or seen someone else whose skin has been transformed into that telltale shade of red. While sunburn is painful, the visible damage is usually gone after a few days. Unfortunately the cells in the deeper layers of your skin have also sustained damage and they may never recover. This can result in future problems such as wrinkles or even skin cancers. Here are some tips that you should keep in mind to make your days in the sun healthy, happy and pain free: • Remember that darker skinned people may not burn as quickly as fair skinned people, but sun damage affects everyone. • Use a sunscreen or sunblock product every day and make sure that the SPF rating is 15 or higher. • Moisturize your skin after you have been in the sun for a few hours to make sure that you are maintaining an adequate level of hydration. • Wear sunglasses that block UV rays and look for swimwear and clothing that provides UV protection. • Hats or umbrellas are great ways to keep your cool on hot days. Covering your head will help protect your hair and scalp from UV light and can make sure that you don’t overheat when in the sun. • Try to avoid being out in the sunlight for long periods of time between the most dangerous hours of 11am to 3pm. • Remember that tanning beds are just as dangerous as being outdoors when it comes to the amount of skin damage that can be done to your skin. • Even if you are using waterproof sunscreen it is a good idea to reapply the product after a few hours. This will help you make sure that you are giving your skin the best protection possible.
