History of Fairies....and Why We Love Them

Fairies are widely known as the magical little people who are beautiful, charming and oh, so clever. They are thought to possess different powers and magic and often spy upon humans. We humans in turn try to find these little creatures in forests and woodlands where they are believed to live.
Fairies are delightful and fun and they have a strong hold on the imagination of millions of people. Even in our modern society it is quite difficult to try to deny the existence of fairies. There are so very many wonderful stories about these whimsical and wondrous creatures that it is hard to imagine life without them.
Almost every culture has its tales of fairies, elves and other magic creatures. Children all over the world over dress as a fairy, sleep in a fairy bed and decorate their bedroom in a fairy theme. In Wales, Ireland and Scotland the culture and legends of fairies are kept alive through storytelling both written and oral. Many of these fairies are highly regarded as being friendly, kind and willing to help humans.
While they do enjoy pranks and riddles, there are tales of some fairies who are not as generous and good natured. Where fairies originated is debatable but one charming story from Cornwall is that these mystical and mythical little people were simply too full of mischief to be angels so they were sent to live on earth.
It is thought that there are 2 main groups of these tiny people. One group loves merriment and these fairies exist in big families and communities. The second group is composed of the loners. These fairy creatures may attach themselves to human homes. Brownies belong to the “loner” category and many pixies are also considered to be loners. Pixies actually divide their time between both classifications. To some fairy enthusiasts, the pixies and brownies are different little beings from the true fairies.
In Celtic legends, the fairies are depicted as very mischievous and fun loving. Stories about fairies have existed for centuries and the first written stories involving fairies occurred in the 12th century. There are now millions of books in existence with stories about fairies from all over the world. Today the fairy godmothers, the Tooth Fairy and the forest fairies are all dearly loved characters for many children. Every culture has slightly differing names for these little people but their descriptions and actions are all much the same.
Here are some notable fairy facts. Many fairies have wings and are known to fly about through the woods at particular times of the day. Fairies also have the power of invisibility that they can use at will. They also possess a charm known as the fairy stroke. With a touch they can cause someone to lose the power of speech.
Fairies love the colour green. They love green so much that they often wear green clothing. They also make their faces, hair and bodies green when they wish to do so. Green, gold and shimmering white are the colors these little people prefer for their fairy dresses.
It is also commonly known that you can only visit the land of fairies if invited by a kind fairy to do so. An invitation to enter fairyland is a very high honor. Fairies issue very few invitations to humans. It is said that their land is a very beautiful place full of wonderful and exciting things to see and do. Should you ever have the chance to visit the land of the fairies remember that if you eat or drink anything you can never leave.
