How to Encourage Your Child to Read

In our opinion, an important thing for a child is to learn how to read. Reading exercises the mind, works the imagination, and takes the child on an adventure they have never gone on before. There are many different types of genres for you and your child to read. From the exciting themes of fiction, true and real non-fiction, or biographies. I believe the first step to encouraging your child or any child to read is, start reading with them at an earlier age.

Reading with them at an earlier age can be the starting process for your child to become a reader. Introducing books to them, reading to them at night, or simply saying “It’s story time,” can make a huge difference. With seeing you read, they will do what any other child would do when they see their parents or siblings do something, they will copy or do the same. By showing them that reading is enjoyable and fun, they’ll think the same thing and want to read even more.

When they ask you to read to them, pull them onto your lap and make the words on the page come to life. Act out the words and act out the movements the page or sentence may require. This will help them picture the scene more easier. When someone in the story talks, use the voice you think the character may have and use different voices and tones for different characters. Don’t make the story boring by talking in the same tone of voice, use different ones to make the story more happy and exciting.

Keep books at reach for younger children by setting them or stacking them on the floor or low shelves. Don’t hide the books from their sight, keep them out and in view around the house so they can reach them and read.

Read very often, every day to your children. This will help them like books, make them want to read more so that they can get involved in a new adventure each day. But don’t only read once a day, read two, three, six times a day. Encourage older readers to read every day and talk to them and discuss what they’re reading about. This will help make them look forward to reading and actually(in the older readers’ case) take in what they’re reading. If it is a good book, they might even become absorbed in the events and want to read more and more.

Give the children quiet time, turning off the TV and radio, so they need to find something else to entertain themselves. If they ask to play with toys, play video games, or play on the computer, try to get them to read. If they’re hesitant to read make a deal with them, for example: “If you read for thirty minutes and tell me what you read, you can _______.” and fill in the blank.

Encouraging your child to read can help them in they long run . Make your family time reading, or if you don’t have family time, start it. Follow these tips with your child and you can see a wonderful thing happen. Reading can help educate your child, so when asked, go ahead and pick up a favorite book and tell them the story within the pages.
