How to Protect your Child when Browsing the Internet

Parents often worry about their children. They do this with good reason. There are many risks children face when they are out of their parent’s eyesight. In the past, if your child was in your home the chances of “stranger danger” rearing its ugly head were next to impossible. However, with the advent of the internet, children are at risk from potential predators all the time. This is because predators routinely use chat rooms and instant messenger services to make contact with children for nefarious purposes. That is why it is critical for parents to take a number of simple steps to make sure their children are safe online.

First and foremost, you need to inform children that there are predators online who do seek out children. By alerting your children of their presence, they can be on the lookout for potentially dangerous situations.

It is also very important that parents learn exactly what the internet entails. For many, terms like “chat room” are mere buzzwords. When parents do not have a clear understanding of where their children are spending their online time, it becomes very difficult to understand warning signs and bad situations.

It is critical to make sure children understand not to believe everything they are told from someone in a chat room. That is, just because someone states they are 13 years old does not mean it is true.

Limit your children’s time on the internet. When your child is allowed to surf on the internet unsupervised for extended periods of time, there is always the potential that the child may visit sites or chat rooms that present a serious threat.

Be sure to ask your child what he or she is doing online, what sites they visit, and what type of people they are chatting with. If your child takes this as an invasion of privacy, let your child know you are looking out for their well-being. Convey to your child that you have a bit of worldly experience and can pick out suspicious behavior a little better than they can. And, most importantly, let them know you are doing this to keep them safe.

Purchase software that can block access to certain websites. This software can filter out adult oriented websites and other places on the internet your child should not be visiting. Also, you could install browsing software that would keep a log of the sites your child is visiting. Yes, most internet browsers come with this function, but the info can be erased or manipulated. Stick with professional security software since it is much more reliable.

Most importantly, it is critical that you children understand they are to contact you immediately if someone asks to meet them in person. This is a very dangerous scenario and your child needs to speak to you immediately if anyone online attempts to do this.

All of these points require a little effort but none of them are difficult. And, yes, they are critically important for those that want to safeguard their children from the great unknown called the internet.
