Mnemonic Hints for easy remembering!Mnemonics is a big word but all it is a memory trick or a way to help you remember things. There are many ways to use a mnemonic at home or at school. Once you get into the habit of doing this, you will find that remembering maths facts, names, dates, and other information is easier than ever. This helps you recall the information that you have stored in your brain by tickling the brain’s memory centre. When you use hints like rhyming, song, imaginary pictures and humour to help you remember things the process goes much faster. You are also more likely to remember fun facts for longer periods of time. Association is one of the ways that you can begin training your brain with mnemonics. When you use association, it means that you link things in order to remember them. • Use the first letters of the words you need to remember to make a new word….If you need to remember the 4 main directions on a compass…..think of “News”…north, east, west, and south, or maybe Naughty Elephants Squirt Water! • You can even use a sentence to help you remember the continents….Eat AN Aspirin After a Night-time Snack….Europe, Antarctica, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America and South America. • The sentence, “Do Men Ever Visit Britain?” will help you learn the British royal order that falls below kings and queens……DMEVB…duke, marquis, earl, viscount, baron. • Rotate your pictures or facts in your mind, let them move around each other or have them dance together to help you remember some facts. Capitals of countries and the countries can dance in your head while holding hands, and this may be just the trick you need to remember Athens, Greece or Ankara, Turkey. • Link your facts by using one colour, smell, or shape or even one word like PEN….protons, electrons and neutrons make an atom. You can make up funny songs, rhymes, or sayings to remember a list of items or facts. Consider how we learn the ABCs by singing a song; this makes it much easier to keep the letters in the proper order. • …..Now make up a sentence that is fun and easy to remember…King Phillip Chewed On Funny Green Sandwiches...any sentence will work as long as you like it and remember it….Then on test day you would remember the sentence and you would know that the correct word order would be K-P-C-O-F-G-S. In spelling mnemonics help by letting you change words into other words so that you can remember the correct spelling. Our brains are very clever but sometimes they just need a little hint or reminder in order to give you the rest of the information.
