Traditional Mattresses versus Natural Mattresses

The traditional mattress that you probably grew up sleeping on is full of chemicals that over time break down releasing toxins.  You then breathe these toxins in as you sleep.  You may think that covering your traditional mattress with a mattress pad or memory foam sounds like a good solution.  Unfortunately these products are also constructed with chemical products resulting in the same problems.

The Chemicals You Inhale as You Sleep

• Polyurethane foam: The chemicals used to make polyurethane foam are known carcinogens.  This means that they are known to cause cancer.  As the foam ages it breaks down and a process known as off gassing occurs.  Basically off gassing is a more pleasant way to say that it is emitting toxic chemicals into the air.

• Polybrominated diphenyl ethers: Also known as boric acid, PBDE’s are used in mattress to make them more fire retardant.  However they have been shown to be so harmful that they are currently being phased out in Europe.  Boric acid is toxic enough that it is commonly used in roach killer.  Both the EPA and CDC warn that it can cause reproductive problems as well as developmental and neurological disorders.  Boric acid is also known to cause dry throat, cough, and eye irritation.

• Formaldehyde: This is another chemical used in the construction of traditional mattresses.  It is a known cancer causing agent and when in the mattress you sleep on every night you inevitably inhale its toxic fumes as you rest.  Formaldehyde is also found in many other household items as well as construction materials; so while it may be impossible to avoid completely, avoiding it while you sleep can greatly reduce your exposure.

Mattress Chemicals and Your Kids

It is bad enough for an adult to be exposed to these poisons but it is even worse for children.  Just like adult mattresses infant mattresses off gas as well.  Studies are showing a correlation between these harmful toxic fumes and SIDS.  Research has shown high levels of these chemicals in the liver and blood of SIDS victims.  You would never knowingly expose your child to polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, phosphorus, arsenic, phophine, arsine, or stibine.  Yet every night when you lay your child down that is precisely what you are doing.

Stopping Toxic Exposure

There is a solution to this problem.  We now have a choice and no longer are forced to put our selves and our families at risk when we lay our heads down at night.  Natural and organic mattresses eliminate these toxins from our beds.  These mattresses are composed of wool, natural rubber, natural latex, and/or cotton.  New speciality mattresses such as the PurFlo cot mattress are also far safer alternatives. It is so simple when you think about it, protect your children and yourself from potential danger, switch to a healthy mattress and a healthier nights sleep.
