If I said do you want to come out and play, Pasuckaukohowog or even if a called it Aqsaqtuk would you know what I was talking about? I don’t think you would but they are very old names for a sport which is extremely popular today. Depending on where you’re from depends on what you call it, some people call it soccer whiLst other people call it football. The Origins of football can be found in every corner of the Globe.
Civilizations throughout history all played ball games and many of these can be considered forerunners to the modern game. Ball games were first played in Egypt as early as 1800 BCE. However there is scientific evidence that suggest that the skilful technique ball games were played even earlier in Ancient China, the game of cuju. There is evidence to show that ball games in Egypt were linked to fertility rites and religious ceremonies.
Okay lets go back before your time ~ or anyone else you might knows time!!
Native American Indians
Did you know that the Native American Indians played football or Pasuckaukohowog . The word Pasuckuakohowog actually means 'they gather to play ball with the foot'.
These games were not very nice and incredibly violent. It was quite often that players would finish the games with broken bones and other serious injuries. In fact the game was almost a war with up to 500 players on each side!!
The players understood the violent nature of the game as they would often disguise themselves with lots of war paint and ornaments to avoid retribution after the game. The game was normally played on a pitch that was often a mile long with goals at either end. The game could last for hours and often carried on from one day to the next.
But in England not so long ago...
The modern rules of football are based on the mid-19th century efforts to unite the widely different forms of football played at the public schools of England. They came up with rules that were known as the Cambridge Rules ~which is really just a code of football rules they made up the rules for allowing goal kicks, throw-ins, and forward passes and for preventing running whilst holding the ball!
So next time when you’re just kick the ball around be thankful it’s a leather ball you’re kicking and not an inflated pigs' bladder that we used before!!!!
