We all love a Snowman
I think that we must all have a little bit of Dr Frankenstein in us, don’t you? We are making a person from snow, and to us the snowman becomes alive, if only for a little while. This is one time that we do not have any steps to follow because; our snowman will be perfect no matter what we do. We can change our snowmen until we fix them just the way we want. One of the songs people sing when it snows is “Frosty the Snowman”. There are a lot of snowmen that will have clothing and faces to make them look like the Frosty in this song. A carrot is often used for a nose, a top hat is placed carefully on his head, a warm scarf tied around his neck and a pipe is put in his mouth. There are many other things that we now like to use to make our snowmen extra special. We add all sorts of clothes and make different expressions on their big snowy faces. Caps, wigs, and even tinsel halos have been worn by some carefree snowmen. They are always happy to let us do what we please. Sometimes we can make our snowmen look like they have arms and then we add gloves and let them hold the snow shovel or an old broom. Kids even make snowmen families and give them names. There are contests to see who can build the biggest or the most unusual snowman. The most common way to make a snowman is to use 3 or 4 separate balls of snow that are stacked on top of each other. It is a lot easier to just push and pack the snow in one big pile though, and snowmen do not mind at all. Some of the snowmen today can be more than 15 feet tall; maybe we should call them snow giants. Snowmen are patient and kind, and they never complain. They are always outside with us and seem to enjoy the fun taking place around them. You will never hear them say it is too cold to be outside. They are just the kind of friend that we always dreamed about finding one day. Everyone that builds a snowman wonders what it would be like if it could come to life just like Frosty. There are always children and adults that peek out from the windows late at night to spy on their snowman hoping to see him move just a little….when he thinks no one is watching. For a few magical days we have created a friend who will stay with us and is happy to watch as we play in the cold and throw snowballs. This is why we never like to say goodbye to our snowmen when the snow begins to melt. It is also why we cross our fingers, and hope that somehow our snowman will be able to stay here with us forever.
