A Look at the Sneezy, Itchy World of Allergies

Everyone has heard of allergies, and some kids have one or more things that can create allergic symptoms like:

• Itchy skin
• Skin rashes or hives
• Sneezing
• Coughing
• Scratchy, sore throat
• Red, watery eyes
• Sniffles and a Runny nose

While lots of people can be allergic to just one thing like dust, wool or strawberries there are others who have allergic symptoms to almost everything around them. Imagine being so allergic that you have to wear only white cotton clothing every day of the year. There are people like this and they are very allergic to manmade cloth and the dyes used to make clothing.

It must be very sad to have allergies to dogs or cats because then you cannot have them as pets. Some parents have allergies and do not allow their kids to have pets. The allergy symptoms are caused by animal dander, which is on the animal’s body and fur, and dander is airborne. You can’t even sneak a puppy or kitten into your room at night, because your mum or dad would begin to sneeze their heads off. Then they would mount a room-by-room search to find the cause.

There are people who are allergic to certain metals or plastics and the allergic symptoms appear if they try to use an I-pod or mobile phone.

Laundry detergents and deodorants are two other allergies that make life tough for people who are sensitive to particular fragrances or chemicals.

Milk, wheat, and corn can all create allergic symptoms.

Tomatoes can cause skin rashes on the mouth, lips, chin, or fingers of those with tomato allergies.

There are doctors who treat patients with allergies to the sunshine. (No, they are not vampires…at least I don’t think they are.)

Chocolate and ocean water are two of the best things in the world and I am glad that I am not one of the people with allergies to them.

Peanuts, eggs, and shellfish are some of the most deadly allergies a person can have. If someone has a severe allergy to peanuts, just being near a peanut butter sandwich could make them break out in hives, skin rashes or have trouble breathing.   If you have an allergy to one of these foods, just trying one little bite could mean a trip to the hospital; and sometimes people will even die. These are not allergies to joke about.

Usually allergies are just an annoying disruption or a nuisance. Luckily, most people with allergies have minor reactions to the substances and products that their bodies cannot tolerate. Usually an allergy will only result in a runny nose; sneezing; coughing; or red, watery eyes.

Being allergic to something is very different from just not liking how something smells or tastes. You may think some of the foods you eat are Yucky, but that does not mean that you will start sneezing or itching if you try a few bites.

There are some foods (including veggies) that can make you have allergic reactions so read on to find out how zucchini, celery, and cucumbers could bring on a fit of sneezes or watery eyes.

• A ragweed allergy makes it possible for someone to sneeze or have watery eyes if they are around ragweed plants or pollen. If you are allergic to ragweed, you may have these same symptoms if you eat:
• Bananas
• Cucumbers
• Melons
• Zucchini
• Sunflower seeds
• Drink chamomile Tea

Okay, now you have a really good reason to give your mum for not wanting to eat some of your vegetables.
“I’m allergic.”

If you have an allergy to the pollen from birch trees, your allergic symptoms can suddenly appear if you eat:
• Pears
• Apples
• Peaches
• Cherries
• Carrots
• Plums
• Apricots
• Potatoes
• Celery
• Kiwi fruit
• Hazelnuts or Almonds

Weed allergies can be caused by more than just weeds. If you eat celery, apples, carrots, melons or add spices like fennel or cumin to your foods  there is a slight chance that you might end up sneezing and coughing for hours.
