Creating a Study Space for a Child
Not only do you have to consider the furniture you might need, location is very important. For those children who become easily distracted, a small nook in a quieter area will be best. There are children who do much better being close to other people however, so you might want to have a study area in the main room of your house. If the area chosen is in a general area of the home, you should make sure that televisions are not on during the homework time. Music can be helpful if it is playing quietly in the background. Make sure that have good lighting and writing supplies at their desk. Next, you will need a desk or table that has a clear, flat work area and a chair that is comfortable and is sized appropriately. Far too often, the tables or desks are a problem because they are too high for the child to be comfortable when working. Finding furniture that is sized correctly for younger children is essential. When your child sits at the table, it should be waist high in order to be perfect for them to read and write comfortably. Their elbows should also be able to bend easily and rest on the tabletop. Some great ideas for desks for children include those with a slanting or sloping top. These usually will have a lid that can be lifted, and you can use the compartment for storage. Having this additional area available for pencils, papers, rulers and other small objects makes this type of desk a great space saver and organizer for small rooms. There are also roll top desks that are sized perfectly for smaller children. These have pull out drawers and small pigeonholes for organizing and storing all types of study and writing supplies. Children will feel very grown up at desks of this type. Many tables today are also functioning as computer desks, and if this is a consideration for your child, even for younger children. If this is the case, make sure that there is room for the monitor and keyboard, which means that a specially designed desk may be a better choice.
