How to plan the perfect tea party for your child

Tea parties for children are special times that blend imagination, role-playing, etiquette, and fun in a splendid combination of whimsical genius.  Little girls adore arranging and setting the tables, and they will welcome guests that include their friends, teddies, dolls, and parents. While a tea party can certainly be a spur of the moment activity on the part of your daughter, there are some great ideas that can be used to transform this event into a fantasy adventure.

Themes can be used to turn an ordinary child’s tea party into an Alice in Wonderland spectacular or a Disney gala. You can even make these fantasy parties a weekly or monthly event and delight your daughter and all of her friends. An added bonus for parents is the fact that this is a chance for children to practice their social skills and manners in a fun filled atmosphere.

Of course, you will want to have the perfect setting for your tea party. During the warmer months of the year, this could be outside, but during the fall and winter, an indoor setting may be the best choice. Select a location that is near a window and place your tables and chairs in a tidy fashion. You and your daughter can choose the table linens, and it will be great fun to coordinate napkins and the tea settings as well. You can even have fun making child size linens if you don’t see any available, and make this a group event by letting all of the invited guests take part.

A wonderful idea is to use a child’s tea set because the size is perfect for their smaller hands and this makes them feel very grown-up indeed. You might consider adding a touch of elegance to the occasion with a silver plated salver, but the guests at a tea party such as this will be happy with whatever you use. For the tea service, a good rule would be to provide two or more finger sandwiches per guest, and these could include fillings from jam and butter to veggies.

Cucumber and watercress sandwiches can be made but children are not too fond of these it seems. Tea, lemonade, fruit punch, or juices are all very good ideas and there should be a selection of fresh fruit and small pastries or cupcakes. If you are having an Alice in Wonderland theme for your party, the cupcakes could have words written on them like “Cheshire cat”, “Alice”, or “the Red Queen”. For a Disney extravaganza, use words like “Princess”, “Cinderella”, “Tigger” or “Mickey and Minnie”.

You can include some background entertainment by having a CD of some favorite children’s tunes playing softly. There are also books on tape that can be found and the guests will enjoy listening to some of the wonderful children’s stories and adventures being told as they enjoy their tea and cakes.

Children also want to dress for a tea party and this is one of the big highlights of the entire occasion. You and your child will have a wonderful time as you search for the proper costumes or dress up outfits to wear. All of the guests can dress as characters related to the party theme, or let everyone choose a surprise costume to wear.

One child may want to come dressed as a Victorian lady; another may want to be dressed in a Red Belle costume. Your own daughter may want to be a princess, and you can find a stunning Cinderella costume online that will make her the hit of the tea party. There is a Disney Fancy Dress Cinderella outfit in blue and silver that can be purchased and it comes with a silver-jeweled crown with marabou trim.  If your child wants to be the royal hostess at the tea party, this will definitely have her looking the part.
