Hey Kids - Eat Your Vegetables!
Eating greens can be a lot more fun if you ask your parents to let you have crunchy fresh veggies that you help select. You can even make veggie pitas, pizzas, and sandwiches that are delicious, and will satisfy your hunger for hours instead of minutes. This makes your body work very efficiently because the fuel from veggies and greens lasts a long time. When you eat sweets like candy or cakes your body uses the energy quickly and then the fat calories remain because you don’t have enough energy to get rid of them. Greens are the most colourful of all of the food groups and these wonderful, healthy products come in a variety of colours besides green or yellow. You can find plenty of choices that are red, white, orange or purple. Both your eyes and your taste buds are in for a real treat when you try unusual things like purple and yellow carrots, orange cauliflower or black and white turtle beans. One of the reasons that some people do not care for the taste of vegetables is because of how they are prepared. Kids have keener taste buds than many adults and for this reason fresh or lightly steamed vegetables taste much better. If you let your parents know that you will try greens that are raw they will happily agree to fix some for you. Some delicious greens and veggies to try: Sweet peppers Other Good things to try: Ask your parents to make a healthy dish of mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes. You really can’t tell the difference but there are far fewer calories in cauliflower. Mini veggie pizzas can be made from English muffins and your choice of toppings. Try combining some green bell peppers, sweet red peppers, cherry tomatoes and pineapple on a muffin and see how wonderful it tastes. Ask your parents to roast some sweet red pepper strips on the grill or in the oven with just a little olive oil. These are better than a candy bar, try them and see.
