Vegetarians Eat More than Veggies


Have you had anyone ask you if want a serving of Guilt with that steak, chicken or burger you are eating? If not, it's likely to happen when you least expect it because the vegetarian lifestyle is catching on among younger people around the world.

If you tell your mum about your interest in being a vegetarian she may be hard to convince. Then she will be thrilled to hear that you want to eat greens and veggies. But then it won't be long until she is worrying that you are not eating enough foods to get the vitamins, calories and protein that you need.

There are some different vegetarian diets and here are the 4 most common ones.
An Ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs and vegetables. Other foods are okay as long as there are no meat products used. A Lacto-ovo vegetarian will eat vegetables, eggs and dairy items but no meat products. A Lacto-vegetarian is someone who will eat vegetables and dairy products but no eggs or meat. A Vegan will only eat foods as long as they are made from plants and vegetables.

The Choice of Vegetarianism
Kids and families can choose to follow vegetarian diets for many different reasons. Younger vegetarians often come from a family that have a vegetarian lifestyle because of culture, health or because they have a deep empathy and love for all animals. Kids who are 12 and older might become a vegetarian because they care about animals or they may have health concerns of their own.

Nutrition for All Ages
A medical professional can help anyone plan a healthy vegetarian diet program. If you think that this is something you would like to try read about it first and then discuss it with your parents. If you eat a large variety of different foods and take vitamins you will have all of the nutrients and calories that you need to grow up healthy and strong.

Vegetarian diets are very healthy and good for your heart and body. On these diets you will eat plenty of fruits and veggies every day. These types of foods have little fat and will keep your cholesterol and weight at the proper levels.

Vitamin B12: dairy; eggs; cereals; wheat and rye breads; soy and rice drinks 

Vitamin D: milk; Vitamin D enriched orange juice; and other products enriched with Vitamin D

Calcium: dairy products; dark green leafy vegetables; dried beans; and calcium-enriched foods like orange juice, soy drinks, and cereals

Protein: dairy products; eggs; tofu and other soy products; dried beans; and raw or roasted nuts

Iron: eggs; dried beans; whole grain breads and cereals; dark green, leafy vegetables

Zinc: bran; wheat germ; nuts; dried beans; and pumpkin seeds
