The life and work of Walt Disney

Walt Elias Disney is the man who created Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and many more beloved cartoons icons that continue to delight fans around the world. Disney once accidentally injured and killed a small owl and vowed never to harm another animal. He also became interested in humanizing animals as characters in his sketches. With his talent, wonderful drawings and imagination he would soon change the world of animation and films forever.

Walt Disney was born on the 5th day of December in 1901, and he began a career as an artist during the Roaring Twenties. His first cartoon success happened in 1928 when he produced and released a short feature called,” Steamboat Willie”. This brief black and white cartoon introduced Mickey Mouse to the world. Years later Walt Disney would tell people that all of his success was due to the work of that one little mouse.

Mickey Mouse became a cartoon favourite and people were soon demanding to see more adventures that featured this character. Disney was happy to oblige but he also began to work on other projects that showcased animation.  In 1937, he created the first, animated feature film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Many people thought that this movie would prove to be very unpopular and lose money, but Disney followed his dream and the movie became a smash hit.

He would soon release other successful animated films including “Dumbo”, “Pinocchio”, and “Bambi”. Today these movies are some of the most beloved of all of the Disney classics, and millions of copies have been sold. Comic books were produced and featured favourite Disney characters including Uncle Scrooge, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck.

The original Mickey Mouse Club was shown to television audiences in 1955 and was another great Disney idea. The show featured young performers known as Mouseketeers who wore their mouse- eared hats on every episode. Disney also began hosting his own weekly television show in 1954. This show was originally titled “Disneyland” and was intended to advertise his soon to open theme park in Anaheim, California. The show was another ratings blockbuster that would run for years with a new title, “The Wonderful World of Disney”. Through the years, audiences have thrilled to many original  Disney adventures including “Peter Pan”, “Mary Poppins”, “The Lion King”, “The Little Mermaid”, “101 Dalmatians”,  and many others.

The first of Disney’s theme parks was opened in California in 1955, and Disneyland quickly became another stunning success. The park was a place filled with fantasy, rides, and shows, and families and children got the chance to meet their favourite cartoon characters. In 1971, Disneyworld and Epcot opened their gates to the public in Orlando, Florida, and today there are other Disney parks in Japan, France, and Hong Kong. All of these attract millions of visitors each year, but Disneyworld, Epcot, and Disneyland are still the favourite destinations for families and fans around the world.
