Wizardly Wonders

Merlin

If you have read the tales of King Arthur then you have heard of Merlin who is also known as The Great Wizard. Until the Harry Potter series, Merlin was perhaps the most famous of all the legendary wizards. Wizards are men and boys who have mysterious powers and magical abilities and many pictures of wizards show them wearing long robes and a tall, cone shaped hat.

• Even the great American author Mark Twain had Merlin appear as a rather villainous character in the tale called “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court”.

• C. S. Lewis also called upon the great wizard, Merlin Ambrosius, to awaken after centuries of sleep to do battle in his exciting trilogy.

• Stephen King has made references to Merlin in his series, The Dark Tower.

• The “Star Trek” series also uses Merlin as a being with eternal life in one of their episodes.

• In the televised series, “Doctor Who”, Merlin is referred to as possibly being a different incarnation of the Doctor in “Battlefield”.

• In the book, The Once and Future King, T.H. White portrays his Merlin character as someone whose life is lived in reverse time from the rest of the world.

• In the world famous Harry Potter series written by JK Rowling, Merlin is mentioned more than a few times as great wizard. Even one of the most famous Wizard World's honours is called the “Order of Merlin”.

• There was a 90s animated series “Legend of Prince Valiant” and Merlin is the advisor for both Prince Valiant and King Arthur.

• Dan Simmons writes in Hyperion about a young lady named Rachel who grows younger each day and forgets her early life, and he gives this process the name of the “Merlin Sickness”.

• Marion Zimmer Bradley has a version of the King Arthur legend called The Mists of Avalon. In the book, she writes about two people who lead the Druids at different times, and each is called “The Merlin of Britain".

• In “The Warlord Chronicles” Merlin is a mysterious and unusual character: readers wonder if he is really a Druid, a magician, a fake, a lunatic or a prophet.

• On television, there is a sci-fi series called “Stargate SG-1” and it shows Merlin to be an Ancient who has been returned to Earth from Atlantis.

• In comics by Marvel and DC, Merlin is shown as a legendary wizard with great powers and wisdom. Merlin is shown to have positive influence as a role model on many super heroes.
