All parents want to build confidence in their little ones. You can begin to do this when they are babies. Babies are relating to you even if they are too young to speak. Their eyes and ears are watching and listening. They understand much more of what is being communicated than you may think.

They are very aware of the tone of voice, the look on your face and the way that you are speaking. Even if your baby does not understand the exact words that you are using they are picking up on body language and other communication. The more communication you establish the more positive feedback you are giving and this in itself is going to boost a baby’s confidence level enormously.

Spend time just speaking with your baby and letting him hear your voice. Avoid rushing through the words. Take the time to let your baby hear your tones and inflections. Let your baby gain confidence by learning these words at his particular pace. He will soon be echoing and parroting your words and sounds. You can let your little one know how pleased you are when he starts responding to your voice with his own. Even if it is only baby babble … smile and let him know how absolutely delighted you are with his version of the day’s events.

This give and take in daily language will encourage your baby to speak more frequently. His confidence level will soar because he is seeing that he can communicate with you and it pleases him greatly. Soon you will have an outgoing and confident babbling brook at your side.

You can also build your baby’s confidence by playing with them. They are not particular about the game, and the sillier and funnier the game the better it is for all participants. You cannot be afraid to get into the spirit of the game. Your baby will learn a lot from your behavior. He will learn that his parents are fun playmates and this will encourage his own creative spirit to reveal itself.

Allow your baby to play with all manner of baby toys and expose them to as many books and pictures as possible. Baby educational DVDs such as the Brainy Baby range are particularly good at building self confidence. Do give high praise for all of your baby’s efforts; this will create an atmosphere for him to blossom as his own person. Many people want to correct every misstep along the way and this can actually cause a baby to lose enthusiasm and confidence.

You can correct when necessary but praise the efforts that he makes. Babies are world-class experts on sensing what people are feeling so ease up on the stress level and relax when you and he are sharing time together.

These interactions will help your baby gain a tremendous amount of confidence in his communication skills and will help him gain self-esteem. He will sense and understand that he is one important little creature in this big world after all, and isn’t this what it’s all about?
