Essential Nursery Furniture

Shopping for the nursery can be one of the most delightful times in your life.  When you start to look for the perfect setup, there are a few essential things that you must have.  While complete nursery furniture sets and individual pieces are available for every budget, you don’t want to skimp on the essential pieces.  You don’t have to buy the most expensive nursery furniture, but durability and safety are important things to consider when going on the furniture quest for baby’s new room.  Exactly what do you have to have?  Here are the things that I couldn’t have lived without.

COT

Cots are available in so many styles; the traditional cot, round cots, convertible cot beds that will last through toddler stage, and portable baby beds.  When purchasing a cot, consider your needs.  Space and bedding are big factors; the round cots are beautiful, but must have a room big enough to support it.  The bedding is not as readily available either, so consider the cost involved with your bed.  A traditional cot works well for most people, and the convertible beds are the traditional size, but can be changed into a toddler and then full size bed.  Portable cribs may work for limited spaces.

When selecting your cot, make sure it meets all safety guidelines and is under warranty.  Most cots are out of circulation with the wide slats and lead paint, but to be safe it is better to buy new on this item.

DRESSER/CHANGING TABLE

These two items are listed together because I found that having a dresser with the changing table on top worked best.  Keeping the nappies and changing materials handy in a drawer and out of sight was a nice feature.  Once baby outgrew nappies, the changing tabletop came off and the toys went on.  The changing table was one of the most used pieces of baby nursery furniture, and having the limited space double as a dresser was a nice perk.  I didn’t have to give anything up to have the function.

ROCKING CHAIR

The time you spend nursing or feeding baby is precious.  Having a comfortable rocking chair in the nursery will provide plenty of opportunity to bond with baby.  It is so comforting for both of you to have that quiet place to go to for songs and stories, with that steady rocking motion.  A rocking chair will also turn into an heirloom piece that you can save for grandchildren or pass onto your own child.  This is an item that is worth its weight in gold, whether you choose one of the new styles or have a family antique.  This is one of the most important nursery furniture items you will buy.

Don’t let yourself get too caught up in the extras until you have these basic items.  You won’t run out of opportunities to spoil your child.   It is always comforting to know that you can come home, change your baby, put on pyjamas out of the drawer, rock him to sleep, and put him snugly in his cot.  Enjoy these moments; they pass in the blink of an eye.
