Buying Christmas Gifts for a Child
It is almost that time of year again, hectic shopping days filled with Christmas music and bell ringing Santa’s. For those little tikes on your list it seems to get harder every year to find a gift they will enjoy. There are so many options it is hard to know where to begin, just look down the baby doll aisle at your local retailer and you will know exactly what I mean. This year make shopping for children's Christmas gifts a little simpler with these tips.
Parents
Always talk to the parents first! They can be your best guide to what the child wants compared to what they are already getting. You do not want the kids opening the same gift from you as their parents bought them, which would detract from both gifts.
Parents will also be able to clue you into what the children already have as well as their likes and dislikes. They may have an idea of what other relatives are getting as well. All great information for you to have before hitting the mall.
Another thing parents are good at is weeding out inappropriate gifts. There just could be a few things on the little ones Christmas list that mom and dad will not allow or approve of. This could be a bad situation so it is best to avoid it if at all possible.
Age
Consider the age of the child in question when making your shopping list. Obviously, a basketball goal is not a very wise choice for a three year old. This will again go back somewhat to parental recommendations, however, there are a few calls you can make just on age alone.
Safety
Today we have safety concerns like never before, lead paint led to many toy recalls last year and will probably do so again this year. The best rule of thumb on this one may be to avoid any toy that is labeled made in China. That in and of itself will limit the toy choices greatly. Nonetheless, if you would rather not be that extreme shop early and google often for toy recalls.
Check the label for the age level recommendation. Many toys meant for older kids are not suitable for younger children due to small moving parts or pieces that may present a choking problem. The manufacturer determines age appropriateness by the level of comprehension of the age group it is intended for. Ever see a baby with a toy; it has one destination every time.
Finally
Remember sometimes the best gift you can give is a gift card for the parents. Especially if you are buying for children you do not know well, or teenagers. Better to give a gift that the child and the family will appreciate than one they will discard.
