How to Give your Home a Child Proof UpdateParents need to make sure that they are taking proper safety measures that will keep the children in the home safe from harm. Of course we could just line the walls and floors with gigantic foam mats, remove all furniture and do away with electrical outlets and sharp objects, thankfully these drastic measures are not needed. It’s easy to have a home that is inviting to friends and family, comfortable, and most of all a child friendly setting for the younger set. The best way to check for obvious hazards is by getting down to your child’s own level. Check out the rooms in your home from their height. This might mean crawling about on hands and knees for a few minutes, but remember it’s all for a good cause. While you are close to floor level you can also check for any objects caught in floor cracks or the carpeting. Stick pins, needles, tacks and other small objects can be overlooked and missed by a vacuum or broom. Tiny items like this can cut or choke a young child so this is a good time to scan the area and remove any problems. A bit of non skid backing placed under small rugs will keep them in place when little feet are roaming about. Never have any plastic laundry or grocery bags lying about within easy reach of children’s fingers. The laundry area can be a danger. Bleaches and other items should always be placed under lock or put on shelves that children can not reach. Irons, portable heaters and other electrical items need to be placed in a safe area where small children can not reach them. Do not use blinds or drapes that have long, dangling cords because these can cause a child to become tangled and some children have even been strangled by these unsightly dangers. Child proof covers for electrical outlets and child proof locks for low cabinets are inexpensive, dependable and easy to install. The protection these items provide is invaluable. Poisons, insecticides and other nasty chemicals must be under lock and key in a high location that is not accessible to kids. Garages are best for these types of products, but do not assume they are safe unless you have them locked up. Always lock your car so exploring children can not crawl into the unoccupied vehicle and get into trouble. Make sure that you always have at least 2 spare keys to the vehicle in case they are needed. Don’t use long tablecloths if you have small children.
