Natural Home Remedies for the Treatment of Head Lice

Head lice are a common occurrence, especially if you have school age children.
Every year there is an out break at a large number of schools involving head lice. Parents are notified and children have their heads checked whenever one or more schoolmates are discovered to have these little pests crawling about their heads.

There are some over the counter remedies that can be used to treat head lice, but as the demand for natural baby and children's products show, many people today would prefer to use natural home  remedies for head lice. There are a number of tested and proven methods that actually do work. Most of these work well because it involves using ingredients that coat the bodies of these parasites. They cannot breathe if heavy oil or creams are covering them and they will expire in a short term.

It is a bit harder to treat the nits, which are the eggs they lay. The nits appear as tiny white specks that adhere to the hair shaft. You can remove these only by using your fingernails to grab the nit and pull it down and off the hair shaft or you can use the very fine toothed nit comb to do the same job in a quicker amount of time.

Some good home remedies to treat head lice include…..

Using 2 tablespoons of pure butter and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice…..combine these ingredients in a thick paste and apply to the entire head for 2 hours. Then you can wash your hair as normal. You must use the comb or your fingers to remove the nits. If you leave them in the hair you will soon have another infestation, because these treatments do not generally kill all of the eggs that are attached to the hair.

You can also coat all of the hair with mayonnaise and leave this on for several hours. The longer the time you leave this on your hair, the greater the chance of ridding the person of the head  lice. Some people will apply products like this and leave it in place overnight. You can use a shower cap to protect the bedding. If you choose this method you can wash your hair and use the nit comb the next morning.

Another of the popular home remedies for  head lice is to use Vaseline which is applied liberally to the scalp and hair. This method will work well to eliminate the head lice but the Vaseline can be very hard to get out of your hair for several days.

There are also home  remedies for head lice which includes washing the hair with pure lemon or lime juice, Listerine plain mouthwash or a shampoo made from 10 drops of tea tree oil and 16 ounces of warm water. You can also make a paste to treat head lice  by using a dozen natural almonds. These should be crushed and then a tablespoon of lime or lemon juice can be added. This can be applied to the hair and scalp and left in place for 1-2 hours. To remove this paste, simply wash your hair as normal.

The more effective of these are using mayonnaise or Vaseline. These do the job neatly and are very economical to use. Many times you will have to treat the head lice infestation more than once, and always remember to remove the nits, they will just hatch and cause another outbreak if left alone.
