How To Make Clay from Bread and Glue
Making Play Clay with only two ingredients
You can make clay from bread and glue, while this may sound a little bit strange, this is one of the easiest ways to make kid friendly clay that can be used for many projects. This project is not only cheap and fun; it gives you a great way use of some of that old bread that may be destined for the waste bin. You can still share with outdoor birds and wildlife, because for this project, you won’t need the crusts at all.
These are the ingredients that you need to turn your bread back into dough.
8-10 slices of white bread, cheap bread that is several days old is great to use
½ cup of inexpensive white glue
A little flour to use on your work counter
Wax paper to make clean up easier
Food colouring if you want to have multi- coloured clay or several different colours of bread clay
After you have removed the bread crusts to feed the birds you can break the white bread into bits and place them in a bowl.
Put a small bit of flour onto a sheet of wax paper to create a lightly dusted surface.
Pour the glue onto the bread and mix this up until it is well coated.
Scoop the contents of the bowl up with both hands and begin patting it into a ball, try to make it smaller in size. When it becomes less tacky you can place it on the wax paper.
Now you can knead and roll this ball around on the floured surface of the wax paper.
You may have to add a bit more plain flour to make this ball become smooth like satin. When you touch your clay it should feel very soft and silky, this takes about 5-10 minutes.
If you want to break the clay into small sections to colour it you can do this. Just take a portion of your creation, add a drop or two of food colouring and roll your ball on wax paper again. If you need to do so, just add a sprinkle of flour to again make it very silky to the touch.
To keep your clay pliable and ready to use you will need to keep it in an air tight plastic container or small sandwich bag. If you create a figure or decorative object from this clay and want to keep it, you can let it air dry for 24 hours or more.
