Memory Magic Begins with a Memory Book
Making a memory book with your child is a wonderful way to create a cherished keepsake and it will also give you time to bond. The opportunity to spend some quality time together is another bonus that you will enjoy when you choose to turn memories into something more tangible that you can touch and hold. Many craft stores have scrapbooks that you can use, but you can use almost any kind of notebook that has a durable cover and can hold an assortment of pages and souvenirs.
You and your children can create a themed memory book for a vacation, holiday or special family gathering. It is also fun to make a book of memories that just includes mementos and reminders of happy times during the year. Ask your child what they would like their book to contain before you begin.
When you have the theme agreed upon you can create a special cover for your child's book. Some of the ones you purchase in a store may have a soft leather cover, or one with a framed slot that will hold a picture. You can still add your own designs to any book cover by using glue, stickers or small craft store decorations. If you want to make a vacation memory book there are 3D ornaments and stickers that you can use to give this a very personal look.
Make sure that you have the kinds of pages with pockets so that you can add photos, ticket stubs, post cards, ribbons, leaves, dried flowers and other treasured objects. You can help your child add a description to the pages so they do not forget the reason that these items were chosen to be included in the book. The leaves may have been found at a park or playground so you will need to list the date and where they were discovered. Leaves and flowers can be placed in a small envelope and added to the pocket on a page so they do not crumble and scatter about. Items like these can also be pressed between two sheets of wax paper and pressed with a warm iron to seal them in place.
You will discover a lot of information about your child if you let them take the lead in creating their book of memories. They may include scraps of wrapping paper, wrinkled ribbons, tiny river rocks or even a discarded pencil to their list of “must keep” objects. Instead of suggesting alternative selections find out why they chose these memories and help them create a book that makes these memories come alive now and in the future.
