How To Make Perfume Instructions for Kids

Perfumes

Making perfume is a way to create a great new fragrance that you really like. This might just become a million pound product for a cosmetics industry, or it may remain a secret that you want to keep all to yourself! Blending different essential oils together is the trick to coming up with a great perfume, and the testing and blending of ingredients are all up to you.

All perfumes are fragrances that are designed by combining different oils together and now this is your chance to express yourself and show others your creative genius. These essential oils have specific scents and smells and they are identified as being base notes, middle notes, or top notes. With base notes, the smell lasts a very long time when applied to your skin. Middle note scents are not quite as long lasting as base notes. The top notes are those in which the smell, or scent, is the quickest to evaporate. This is one of the reasons a perfume will have a different scent after it is has been applied for a few hours. You can make many different perfumes by mixing at least 18-25 drops of essential oils together. You should have almost an equal amount of base, middle, and top notes in your perfume recipe. Experimenting with changes in the amounts of each group will create a number of very different smelling perfumes.

The first step in creating perfume is to put about ½ ounce of jojoba or sweet almond oil into your bottle, and then add the base note oils.

Next, you can add the middle notes and then the oils listed as top notes.

If you are using bridge- oil, add only a few drops at the very end of the recipe, and then add 2 ½ ounces of vodka to your oils. Your parents will need to add the vodka to the mix for you.

Make sure your glass bottle has a secure top and then shake your fragrance for 2 or 3 minutes to combine the oils and alcohol. Now comes the very hardest part of all. Waiting for all of the ingredients to blend together to create the perfect fragrance. This will take at least 48 hours and your perfume will be stronger and more intense if you let it sit for 2-4 weeks on a shelf before uncapping it for the first time. When you open your bottle, you will need to add 2 level tablespoons of distilled water and strain the liquid by pouring it into a coffee filter. Now your perfume is ready to use, and you can impress all of your friends and family.

Always write down your perfume recipes as you mix them, otherwise you may not be able to duplicate that great scent a second time. Do remember that you can always add more oil, but if you use too much oil at the beginning, it is difficult to dilute the strong scent. To store your perfumes use blue or brown coloured glass bottles with tight fitting corks or stoppers. The bottles and stoppers will protect the perfume from changes that could be caused by air or sunlight.

Some of the oils that have base notes are:

Vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood, cinnamon, clove, jasmine, rose, and ginger

Some of the oils with middle notes are:

Bay, black pepper, lavender, geranium, nutmeg, hyssop, fennel, and rosemary

Some of the oils with top notes are:

Basil, cinnamon, grapefruit, lemon, lime, hyssop, rose, and peppermint

Two oils that have bridge notes are:

Vanilla and lavender

You can create a forest or woodsy scent, a floral fragrance, a citrus blend or many other smells. A fresh ocean scent is made by adding a bit of sea salt. If you want a strongly spicy smell, you can use a bit of black pepper, cardamom, or clove.
