Arnold Schwarzenegger for Kids

Arnold Schwarzenegger

When you think of Arnold Schwarzenegger you always think of him in action films, where he is playing a tough guy and beating bad people. There is lots of information about Arnold Schwarzenegger that you probably didn't know, before he became an actor and what made him decide to become a governor.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria in 1947; he was raised by his parents in a small village there. His dad was the local policeman and both of his parents were very strict, they were very religious and the whole family attended church every Sunday. As a child Arnold played many sports, although his dad wanted him to play football at the age of 14 he decided that he wanted to body build instead.  In 1965 when Arnold was just 18 he joined the army, he only did one year there before returning home. During his time in the army he skipped to enter a body building contest.  It was so important to him that he got into a lot of trouble but was glad he had done it. He went on to have a career in body building and was awarded the title of Mr. Universe at the age of 22 he then went on to win Mr. Olympia seven times. Even when Arnold had finished body building he kept very interested in the sport. He has written several books and many articles about the sport.

This was Arnold's way to move to America, he planned to become a star and get rich. He moved to America in 1968 and he couldn't speak any English at all, he had to learn very quickly. Arnold wanted to move from body building to acting and in 1970 he was given his first part in a film. He still couldn't speak English well so they used somebody else's voice for the film. Arnold improved his English and went on to have many other parts in films. He is of course most famous for the role of the terminator; this role was suited to him because of his size at 6ft 2" and the way he looked.

Arnold is married to Maria Shriver who he met in 1977 and married her in 1986; she is the niece of John F Kennedy. They have four children and currently live in Brentwood, they own several holiday homes around America and every Sunday they attend Mass at the local Catholic Church. Arnold loves motorbikes and has crashed two over the years, causing injury to himself both times. The first time he cut his lip, needing 15 stitches and the second time he broke his ribs and kept in hospital.  He loves adventure and in 2004, whilst on holiday he rushed into the sea to save a drowning man.

Arnold has always been very interested in politics, and even when he was acting people would often be told what he felt regarding the president and his policies. In 1993 Arnold became a Red Cross ambassador and tried to get more people to donate blood. It is a very worthy cause to be involved in. In 2003 Arnold decided to try to become governor and he was voted in, he has achieved some big things whilst as governor and many people are hoping he will continue to stay as one.
