If you have kids, you'll find that it is pretty common for many to be afraid of the dark. However, no doubt you want to help your child to get over that fear for good so you don't have to check under your child's bed each night before they'll go to sleep. In many cases a change in environment can trigger this type of fear, such as a move, trouble in the family, or even a new schedule, although in some cases there is no real significant cause for the fear. So, here are some simple tips that can help your child to get over being afraid of the dark.
Tip #1 - Take Time to Listen - One of the most important things that you can do is to take the time to actually listen to your child. Often you'll find that just talking about their fear is a huge help to your child. When you take the time to talk you may even find that what they have to say will give you a clue about where their fear came from too, allowing you to help them more effectively.
Tip #2 - Show understanding - If you are trying to help your child get over their fear of the dark, it's also very important that you show understanding and patience. Even though it may seem like a small fear, this is a large fear for them. Showing understanding will encourage them talking to you and help them work through their fears.
Tip #3 - Let Them Get Upset - Instead of trying to keep your child from getting upset, just allow them to get upset about their fear. This is all a part of them trying to get over their fear. Allow them to rehash their fear and remember that they be a bit focused on the fear for a while. This is a natural way for a child to try to get over their fears. So, don't try to keep them from talking about it and don't try to talk them out of getting upset. It's all a part of the process.
Tip #4 - Teach Your Child to Overcome the Fear - Teaching your child to overcome this fear is important. It will be important now and for their entire life as while. Take the time to teach your child important skills about working through a fear, such as thinking through the fear, learning to face it, exploring the room with the light on before bed, and even going through the room after dark with you with them. It will take time, but it's important that they learn how to work through their fears, even while they are young.
