Most people have heard the story of Peter Pan. The tale of the boy who wouldn't grow up is a fantasy story that was created by JM Barrie. This story has entertained children and adults, but there are many people who do not know that this story is doing much more than providing entertainment. JM Barrie left the rights to Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Hospital and since his death in 1937, Peter Pan has been helping this hospital and its patients.
Barrie's Legacy
Peter Pan is very special to the people at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Every royalty from plays, books and other products goes to the hospital and helps ensure the hospital can provide the highest quality level of care to its patients. Barrie loved children and supported the hospital during his lifetime, so when it was discovered that he had left the rights to Peter Pan to the hospital it was not a huge shock, but rather a huge honour.
The Fundraising Week
Peter Pan Week is a fund raising project put on by the hospital each year. In 2010 the event is being held the 26-30 April. There will be many Peter Pan themed events and even a try at breaking a Guinness World Record. Groups are encouraged to attend the event and help in the fund raising efforts.
During Peter Pan Week attendees put on their best Peter Pan themed adult and children's fancy dress costumes. This means a lot of fairies, pixies and other fairy tale costumes. Making the costumes is actually one of the best part for all the children involved in Peter Pan Week.
As mentioned, in 2010, during Peter Pan Week there is to be an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest Peter Pan dress up day in history. The attempt to break the record will happen on 30 April at 9:15 am. It will last for 10 minutes, so everyone is encouraged to take 10 minutes out of their morning, put on a costume and come by the event to help get Peter Pan Week on the record books.
Make a Difference
Peter Pan Week is about so much more than a fairy tale story or fun costumes. All the events and fun is for a good reason. That reason is to help the Great Ormond Street Hospital. The money raised is put to good use providing things for the hospital and for patients at the hospital.
This year the goal is to raise £160,000 during Peter Pan Week 2010. The money from this year's event is going to help in building two en suite bedrooms in the cardiac centre of the hospital. New rooms are much needed in this cramped area. More rooms, means more space for the life saving equipment and makes it much easier for the wonderful staff at the Great Ormond Street Hospital to give exceptional care to patients.
Peter Pan Week 2010 is going to be a great time for everyone. There are still opportunities to raise money and become a part of this fun, fantasy filled week to help the patients at the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
