+/- indicates movement up and down since 2006.

For the thirteenth year in a row, the name Jack has remained the favourite among parents of newborn boys. Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that 6,772 boys were given the name Jack in England and Wales in 2007, slightly down from the 6,928 in 2006, but enough to retain the nation‘s most popular baby boy’s name. New entries into the boys top 50 names list were Isaac, Finlay and the biggest mover of all Jayden rising 36 places to enter as the 32nd most popular boys name.

For girls, Grace has overtaken Olivia as the most popular name for girls. There were two new entries into the top 50 girl‘s names, with Ava and Summer entering into 41st and 44th position respectively.

However, despite the wealth of online baby naming tools, baby naming books and the supposedly mad-rush for novel names, almost all of the top ten names for both boys and girls have stayed there from the previous years.

Elsewhere, the popularity and power of celebrities such as Leona Lewis was illustrated by the huge rise on the popularity of the name Leona, jumping 236 places to reach 198th position, and the highest new entry in the boys top 50 names (Jayden) being the name of a Will Smith‘s son.
