Bedwetting Advice

Looking for help and advice on child bed wetting problems?

If your child wets the bed, don’t worry!  Seven out of ten children naturally grow out of bedwetting by the age of seven. It is widely believed that in the vast majority of cases, children who wet the bed do so because they are slower to develop bladder control. In only 2% or so of cases is there an actual medical or emotional cause of bedwetting.

It’s worth noting that more than 75% of UK children still wet the bed when they reach school age, so if your child is approaching that age the clear message is that it’s fairly common behaviour. Even for older children you’ll be interested to learn that more than half a million children in the UK aged five and over regularly wet their bed, and approximately 12% of 6 year old children and 5% of 10 year olds regularly wet the bed, and will eventually grow out of it.

It’s probably best not to prevent your child from taking a drink before bedtime as this will not allow them to “learn” how to control their bladder through the night. Neither is it advisable to lift your child out of bed and carry them to the loo in a sleepy state as this too inhibits their natural development.  A relaxed “no big deal” approach is likely to achieve a far quicker end to bedwetting as any negative talk or actions will only add to the child’s anxiety. A good bedwetting sheet (like that shown below) and maybe even a bedwetting alarm may be the best place to start.
