Over exposure to the sun's UV (ultraviolet) radiation can not only cause serious sunburn, but can lead to skin cancer as well as premature skin aging and other serious health problems. Even just a few incidents of blistering sunburn during childhood can double the risk of melanoma later in adult life. Melanoma is one of the fastest-growing forms of cancer and the number of cases has more than doubled over the past two decades.

Recent medical research has shown that it's very important to protect children from overexposure to UV radiation, as the majority of most people's sun exposure occurs in childhood, and studies increasingly suggest a link between early exposure and skin cancer as an adult.

In additional to wearing UV sun protection swimwear and clothing, it is recommended that children:

• Wear sunglasses that block 99-100% of UV radiation
• Wear a hat
• Cover exposed areas with sunscreen (but never of babies under 6 months, who should be kept out of the sun altogether).
